The Source of Life — Temperature, Heartbeat, and Breathing
The human body is composed of various organs, which together form the tangible body, and it is also driven by intangible energy, known as the spiritual body.
What we call “energy” was referred to by our ancestors as “spirit,” which is actually the combination of vital essence (jing) and spiritual energy (shen) — often termed “jing, qi, and shen” or simply “vital energy (yuan qi)”.
To maintain vital energy, the body relies on thermal energy, known in medical terms as body temperature.
Thus, body temperature is an essential condition for sustaining human life.
Although temperature is an intangible form of energy, without it, the human body would merely be a decaying corpse.
To achieve a healthy body, one must maintain a normal body temperature, a steady heartbeat, and smooth breathing.
Among these, temperature plays the most critical role.
Without proper body temperature, both heartbeat and breathing cannot function normally.
The human body behaves much like a heat-sensitive system, expanding with warmth and contracting with cold.
When the body expands due to heat, blood vessels and meridians throughout the body remain open and unobstructed, making blockages less likely.
Conversely, in the cold, blood vessels constrict, making blockages more prone to occur.
Core body temperature is formed through the energy released by the oxidation (metabolism) of nutrients from food consumed, sustaining the body’s activities and survival.
People who exercise infrequently or are older tend to have thinner blood vessels and meridians, making them more prone to numbness and pain in the limbs.
This is especially true at night (between 11 PM and 5 AM), when metabolism slows, and the body is more vulnerable to temperature loss and subsequent vascular blockages.
Those who maintain a regular exercise habit tend to have broader blood vessels and better circulation.
This corresponds with the traditional Chinese medicine saying: “Where there is flow, there is no pain; where there is pain, there is no flow.”
Therefore, to maintain good health, it is essential to engage in appropriate physical exercise and consistently preserve a normal body temperature.
